Portumna u9's edge past Birr in a tight affair. The U9 squad played only their second home fixture in the 2009/10 season a remarkable statistic on the penultimate weekend of their season. From the off the home side laid seige to Birr's goal and was rewarded with the lead after seven minutes. It continued in this vein until half time but the score remained the same thanks to resolute defending by the away side and a lack of composure in front of goal by the home side. The second half begun with Birr attacking and the Portumna lads showing that they can roll up their sleeves and work hard defending also. Indeed once Portumna weathered the Birr storm they were very unlucky not to increase their lead. The crossbar and post coming to Birr's rescue.Another win under these young lads belts on a scoreline of 1.0.The attitude and endeavour shown by the team even when tired legs seem to hamper them was very pleasing and was praised by the coach afterwards.Their season results are proof of these qualities with a great winning streak throughout the season with only one loss to blot that amazing run to date.Very promising for next season! Birr brought a second team to Church Rd also and Portumna's u8's lent assistance to the u9s in fielding another team. These players showed great resilience in holding Birr to a 1.1 draw. U9 SQUAD: N.Connelly, M.Walsh, A.Flaherty, S.Brien, D.Gorman, A.Page, D.O'Donoghue, C.Farrell, C.Hanley U8 Players: A.Kelly, J.Birtwhistle, R.Connelly, C.Martin, S.Killackey, J.Kelly, O.Larkin and thanks to Brian (u8 coach) for his help.
Portumna travelled to Killavilla for todays league match. Portumna had recently had a great battle with Killavilla at home with a 2-2 draw. Today’s encounter was going to be even more of a battle. Portumna had significant depleted numbers with only 12 outfield players available, one of whom (Simon Curran) had to go at half time due to other commitments. First team regulars Rona O Meara, Eamonn Larkin along with Rian Hogan, Max Parry, Sean Neylon & Paddy Lawless were all missing. Portumna started the game brightly with Colin Burke playing up front on his own and supported by a 5 man midfield marshalled well by Conor Barry. Eoin Foley and Niall Concannon were centre halfs. Portumna opened the scoring with a fantastically structured goal. Conor Barry got the ball and passed it out to Simon Curran who attacked the right back for Killavilla he then slotted the ball back to Conor Barry who laid it onto Colin Burke who stole through the Killavilla defense to score beautifully. The Portumna second was also a fantastic effort as Conor Barry broke the offside trap and powered in on the killavilla goal. He set the ball to strike with his left but took a bit too long before trying to get his strike off and the defender slide tackled in to take the ball away but inadvertently it went into the path of Simon Curran who had been tracking Conors run. Simon scored a cracking second goal for Portumna to go in 2 nil up at half time. Unfortunately Killavilla were fired up for the game and tore into Portumna in the second half. Cormac Houlahan came on in the second half and acquitted himself very well and was unlucky not to get a goal as the keeper made a good save. Killavilla scored their first goal when the Portumna defense for the first time all day stood off the attackers and we gave them too much time and space as he sent his shot into the far right corner. 2-1 and it was getting very lively. There was no quarter asked or given as both teams tore into each other. Yellow cards began to be produced. Conor Barry was cautioned for aggressive behaviour. Eventually it boiled over as Eoin Foley and a Killavilla attacker had a bit of a barney and both were sent off. Young Foley is not aggressive and it was a surprise to see him getting a red card. He had been the best player on the pitch all day as he marshaled and harried the Killavilla attackers. Unfortunatly the referee awarded Killavilla a penalty and that drew the match 2-2. With only a few minutes to go there were golden opportunities at either end for a winner. Conor Barry who had been put back into central defense took the ball at the half way line and powered past the Killavilla left winger and then past the central defender, he unleashed a right footed effort across the keeper and somehow the keeper made the save to go out for a corner. At the other end the usually very dependable Padraig Corcoran played a back pass to the Niall Royston who had been calling for it. The young defender did not realize that there was a Killavilla attacker in the area who latched onto the loose ball and sent the shot just past the post. 2-2 was a fair result for both teams.
Portumna travelled to local rivals Birr for this league encounter. Portumna were hoping to reverse the earlier league 3-2 defeat from earlier in the season. Portumna were missing the influential Ronan O'Meara who sustained a broken thumb in hurling training. His presence was going to be missed. Both teams started brightly and they both were fully committed to the cause. Birr opened the scoring about 20 minutes in with a well structured goal as they beat the offside trap and slotted the ball home past a stranded Niall Royston. One nil at half time slightly flattered Birr. Into the second half and the game took a serious twist as Niall Concannon prevented a sure fire goal for Birr by handling it. Unfortunately the referee had no choice but to show a straight red card to young Concannon. Birr missed the resultant penalty and this somehow fired up the Portumna Players who tore into Birr. Within 5 minutes of the penalty Eamon Larkin received the ball from Sean Tuohy in the box and controlled it superbly and struck a cracking shot into the bottom left of the Birr goal. Shortly afterwards Simon Curran once again controlled a superb cross form young Tuohy and once again shot into the bottom corner for an unlikely 2-1 lead in the game. Unfortunately that was not to be the end of the goals as Birr stepped up the pressure and scored a scrappy equalizer with 10 minutes to go. Finally in the last few minutes Birr crossed in a ball in to the Portumna box which was flapped at and swung at wildly by numerous Portumna players but unfortunately not cleared and the Birr attackers had the simplest of tasks to slot home the winner. Portumna were very unlucky to end up losers having played and battled so well for such long periods.
Portumna played their last home league match of the season and hosted Emo in this bottom of the table dogfight. Portumna had a full compliment of players and once again began the match very brightly. The line up was changed around a little. Niall Concannon went into centre half, Colin Burke pushed into midfield with Conor Barry playing as a deep second striker to Ronan O Meara. Portumna got really stuck into EMO and yet again spurned at least 8 gilt edged chances as they powered forward. Emo could not handle the mix of power and intelligent play that Portumna were offering up. Simon Curran was terrorizing the Emo right back and with his overlapping runs was creating loads of great chances. Conor Barry was linking great with the midfield –Colin Burke causing untold damage as Emo fought hard to stay in the game. Padraig Corcoran was having a very solid game at left back and Eoin Foley was having a cracking match at centre half. All the rest of the payers were having great games. Eventually after a lot of pressure, Portumna scored the opening goal-Ronan O Meara scoring form an unlikely angle having somehow got away for the presence of three Emo defenders. Portumna felt that once we got the breakthrough that surely we would kick on. How wrong we were. Emo fought back to get an equalizer just before half time. One all did not reflect the game but as has been said before on numerous occasions you have got to take your chances. Portumna were given a dressing down at half time as the players were told to cam down and work the keeper at least when shooting. The second half started brightly with Ronan O Meara winning a free kick (which should have been a penalty) He stood up and slotted it in the top right corner. A third goal was struck shortly after as a Conor Barry effort was kept out and Sean Tuohy followed up to put Portumna 3-1 up a further goal by young O'Meara put Portumna into a commanding lead with only 10 minutes to go. The Portumna manager decided to give the subs a run out-this was an error in judgment. 5 changes was too much in a short space of time and Emo seized on the fact that the subs were not yet up to match pace and took the initiative as they scored a quick goal to go 4-2. Within a few minutes it went 4-3 as Niall Royston the Portumna keeper was harshly judged to have bought down an Emo player and a penalty was awarded. The Portumna manager looked on in horror as he assessed the damaged he had caused by making so many changes. With the role on role off system He was able to rejig the team as he brought back on a couple of players to help steady the ship. This seemed to settle the team and young O’Meara took advantage of a poor back pass to slot home his fourth and Portumna’s fifth to ease the nerves. Portumna finished 5-3 winners and were well worth the win but the manager could have rued his mistake and will be sure not to do such large changes in future.
Portumna hosted Killavilla for today’s encounter on a clear and beautiful spring day. Portumna had managed to pick up some much needed points over the last couple of weeks and were looking to push on up the table. Killavilla are always a difficult team to play against and have caused a few upsets over the last few seasons. Portumna started the tie brightly and set the tone for the match with some very early pressing. Killavilla didn’t really get the chance to settle as we drove forward with some very good displays around the pitch. Somehow Portumna failed to get the early goal with a combination of poor finishing and some good saves by the excellent James Quinlan-the Killavilla keeper. Portumna had the better of the first half and eventually got the break through with Ronan O Meara once again scoring the vital first goal. One nil up at half time was scant reward given our domination for the first half. Killavilla came out a completely different team in the second half and put Portumna under pressure. Eventually they scored an equalizing goal. Portumna kept going and didn’t let the goal unsettle them too much. However after another couple of missed opportunities Killavilla scored a second to go up in the match for the first time with about 10 minutes left. Incredible that Portumna now faced defeat after all of the great possession and strikes on goal. As the minutes ticked by Portumna got a corner, everyone went forward. Sean Tuohy sent in the cross, it was only half cleared and it landed to the most dangerous man on the pitch. Cool Ronan O’Meara took a touch and let the ball settle as he struck a right footed shot in the top corner for an incredible equalizing goal. There wasn’t even time for a restart. Both management teams agreed that the correct result was had but how we could have done with the three points. Still one all with Kilavilla is a very creditable result.
Saturday saw local rivals Eyrecourt visit Portumna for this U9 encounter. From the off it was evident that the visitors were determined to make up for the 7-1 defeat inflicted on them by Portumna when the sides last met. Eyrecourt started the quicker and silenced the home crowd by taking the lead. Portumna's passing game, usually so assured was stuggling as were the players with the robust, physical and bigger opposition. Some great work down the right flank culminated in the equaliser. Game on! Luck can play a big part in soccer. Eyrecourt made their own while it looked like Portumna had upset the soccer gods. Two cruel deflections saw the visitors take a 3-1 lead at half time. Despite this Portumna didnt give up and did all the pressing in the second half. The Eyrecourt goalie saved a certain goal from a free kick his fingertips being the difference. It seemed only a matter of time before the ball would be in the Eyrecourt net. But it wasn't to be. The local lads rattled the crossbar on two occassions and the determined Eyrecourt defence scrambled the ball off the line on another three occasions. With Portumna laying siege to the Eyrecourt goal two forays into the Portumna box yielded two penalties which were coolly slotted away. Final score 5-1 to the visitors. Credit to the visiting team who showed great determination. The home team learned a valuable lesson in soccer today that there will be days like this. Credit to the young lads of Portumna they never gave up or stopped trying to play their way and this attitude was praised by their manager after the game. Squad C.Hanley, D.O'Donoghue, A.Page, B.Murphy, D.Gorman, S.Brien, N.Connelly, M.Walsh, C.Farrell, B.Tuohy
Portumna travelled away to meet Mullingar in the reverse fixture form the previous week. How things change in just a few short days. Portumna were dominant in the home fixture where the score line could have been 6 or 7 nil but were very poor from the off. Great credit to Mullingar they got stuck into us straight away and they had three or four players who really shone. Portumna went a goal down after 10 minutes and it had been coming with Portumna having to handle a lively Mullingar team out for some revenge. Some of the Portumna team just didn’t seem to be too bothered in putting in a shift. Portumna got an equalizer from Ronan O'Meara. Mullingar then went a goal ahead. Colin Burke scored another equalizer from a very good cross by Conor Barry. Two all at half time was more than we deserved Mullingar had the better passing and deserved to up in the game. The play didn’t get much better in the second half, Conor Barry played a terrific ball into Ronan O’Meara who scored a fantastic 3rd goal for Portumna, his second for the day. However Mullingar kept pressing and after a poor challenge in the middle of the park Mullingar were awarded a free kick which wasn’t cleared and Mullingar took advantage by scoring, it was a terrible goal to give away right at the death. A very disappointing result but to be fair Mullingar deserved at least to draw if not win it outright.
Following on from last weeks U10 midlands league futsal tournament, Portumuna travelled today to meet T&S Utd in the quarter final. With 2 minutes to go in this match, we were losing 1-0. Sean Lynch scored a cracking goal, followed by another from Darragh Barry. We were now through to the semi-final and were meeting Emo. This match was 0-0 at full time and had to go to penalties. First up to take the penalty was Darragh Barry and this was saved by their keeper. Emo went on to score the next penalty. Then Oisin O'Sullivan scored his goal and so did Sean Lynch. After the 3 penalty shoot outs by the two teams we were still drawn.
Declan Gorman took Portumna's next penalty and scored. Emo stood up next for their penalty and this was saved by our goalie Oliver Parry. We were through to the final. After a 5 minute break, we started the final against Portlaoise. After full time, there was no score, and it was back to penalties again. The teams nerves were shattered by now, but our 3 penalty takers stood up to the challenge. We won the toss, Sean Lynch scored the 1st penalty, followed by portlaoise who also scored. Oisin O'Sullivan took the next penalty and scored, Portlaoise's next penalty was saved by Oliver, Darragh Barry had to take the last penalty. There wasn't a sound to be heard in the hall, Darragh walked up to the ball, blessed himself and put it in the back of the net. The hall erupted!!. Portumna have won the U10 futsal tournament. There were 19 teams altogether in this tournament, so it was a huge achievement for the Portumna U10 squad. A huge thank you to all our players, parents & supporters who turned up today to see this fantastic final, and also to O'Meara's for laying on food afterwards for the team. Well done boys! Oliver Parry - Goalie, Francis Starr, Jason Doerflinger, Darragh Barry, Sean Lynch - Captain, Oisin O'Sullivan, Neil Connelly & Declan Gorman.
Portumna hosted Mullingar Athletic at Marion Park in this league encounter. Mullingar have acquitted themselves reasonably well having come up from division 1. They have had wins over Kilavilla and Emo home and away with 9 points on the board albeit it from 11 games played. This was Portumna’s first chance to play one of the teams lower in the table and was the perfect opportunity to try and climb the league table. Portumna had a strong team to select form with only Darren Dillon and Rian Hogan missing through injury. The match had a bizarre start as the Mullingar Ath side had forgotten the kit. Mullingar had to play in the U13 kit which was used in the previous game and it made for an usual sight to see two Portumna strips out on the field. The starting 11 had a familiar look with Simon Curran on right midfield and Sean Tuohy up front with Ronan O’Meara, Colin Burke back in central defense and Conor Barry and Eamonn Larkin in centre midfield. Portumna set out the team in a standard 4-4-2 formation. The game was scrappy at the start however Portumna were in the ascendance from the off and after some concerted pressure got the opening goal from some good play by Ronan O’Meara who put in a great cross across the box from the left and finish off coolly by Sean Tuohy. Mullingar were very unlucky not to get an equalizer when after some good play they created havoc in the Portumna penalty area and somehow they missed an open goal by inches. Portumna kicked on from that scare and had some good possession for the rest of the half and scored a second goal after some neat play from midfield released Ronan O’Meara who bore down on goal, as he came in from the right he decided to shoot with his left which was the wrong option however his misplaced shot rebounded off the keeper and he slotted the rebound away to go 2-nil up. The second half was of much better quality. With Portumna in the ascendancy and flashes of some really good passing and movement especially down the left side. Portumna were awarded a free kick on the right side of the Mullingar box. Ronan O’Meara hit a sweet strike over the Mullingar keeper to score a wonderful Goal. The final goal was finished very well by Niall Concannon after a significant amount of pressure form Portumna. There is no doubt that Portumna should have had a few additional goals but a 4-nil win was much welcomed after the disastrous start to the season and although there were many good performances it would be hard to pick out a single player for man of the match.
Portumna u10 travelled to Birr Town for this match. Portumna have always had great battles through all the age groups with Birr and this match was no exception. Both teams were fairly evenly matched in the first half and Portumna were delighted to go one up after a deflected strike from Oisin O’Sullivan. The second half was a somewhat easier affair for Portumna but they couldn’t get that all important second goal after numerous shots at goal. Luckily Portumna finished the game 1-nil winners to maintain their lead at the top of the league. No doubt that this team deserves to be on the top but there are many more twists to be had in this exciting division.
Portumna u10s put in a futsal team selected form u10s and u9s for this one off competition held at Mountmellick School Gym. The team for the competition is Ollie Parry, Jason Dorfinger, Francis Starr, Sean Lynch, Oisin O’Sullivan, Declan Gorman, Neil Connelly & Darragh Barry-Coaches Seamus Lynch & Ann Marie Barry Great credit to the futsal team in winning all three of their group games to go storming into next weeks Quarterfinal stage. Special Mention to the Portumna’s defense of Ollie Parry (goals) Francis Starr (defender) and Jason Dorfinger (defender) who only conceded 1 goal between them over the three matches. It takes a huge amount of ability and skill to achieve this against such good teams. Also special mention to the two under 9 players declan Gorman and Neil Connelley to step up to this level and to have played so well. The whole teams including all goal scorers have really impressed and hopefully the team can progress even further. There is no doubting that they have the ability to all the way to the top.

U14 Portumna Town V Tullamore Town
Portumna had their first outing for nearly two months when they hosted the league leaders Tullamore who have won all 7 of their games in the league this season. Portumna had one point from their opeining 5 games - Not one for the bookies. Portumna were missing their top striker Ronan O’Meara and impressive centre half Colin Burke along with Tommy Heagney the ever present right back as well as Cormac Holahan & Ryan Hogan (injuries). Portumna had two subs available and had it all to do. Many of the team had to play in different positions which can be difficult. Niall Royston-goals, Niall Concannon slotted into the centre half role, Padraig Corcoran into left back, James Coughlan on left wing, Conor Barry,Max Parry and Eamon Larkin Centre midfield, Sean Tuohy right wing and the nippy Simon Curran upfront. Subs Paddy Lawless and Sean Neylon.
The game was played in good but slightly foggy conditions and was played at a very fast pace. Portumna had to hold on in the first few minutes as Tullamore threw everything at Portumna. Tullamore are a team full of good players many played interleague and some are involved with the FAI regional centre and playing at a high level. Portumna repelled the first few attacks and having weathered an attack Conor Barry drove through the Tullamore midfield and set up a counter attacking goal which was slotted home by the very quick Simon Curran. Conor gave a very impressive performance in the first half mixing great technique, skill and desire and this seemed to help lift the whole team. Simon Curran didn’t stop running throughout the match and was unlucky not to add to his one goal tally. After the shock of going a goal down Tullamore began to exert pressure on our back line. A couple of times our defenders were caught under the ball and on one occasion Johnny McEvoy the Tullamore striker read this and stole in on the blind side of Eoin Foley to slot home the equalizer. Young Foley who is a very trusted centre half was very disappointed to get caught by a simple hoofed effort but he didn’t let his head drop and gave a very solid performance for the rest of the game. Portumna were giving Tullamore a hell of a game and there seemed very little between them. Unfortunately a mix up between Niall Concannon and Niall Royston gifted Tullamore the lead. A simple lack of communication meant that both players dithered and the Tullamore forward stole in to nick the ball and slot home. 1-2 at half time was unfortunate. Portumna’s goal was created by excellent skill and endeavor and some great work by Simon Curran to received the ball and coolly slot home, whereas Tullamores goals were gifted to them. This is the frustrating thing regarding Portumna this year, a lack of focus or concentration has cost us dearly. Max Parry came off and Paddy Lawless went on for him in the second half. Later in the half James Coughlan came off and Sean Neylon went on. The second half started brightly with Portumna spurning a couple of good opportunities with Conor Barry and Simon Curran along with Eamon Larkin causing some difficulties. As the second half wore on Tullamore began to get on top and when the third goal went in about 10 minutes into the second half, you could see the energy begin to sap from Portumna. Tullamore with a full compliment of subs, some of whom played inter league level came on and this was the death knell for Portumna. Not only were they up against a fresher team but the strength of the Tullmaore bench became evident as they pressed on and scored a further 4 goals in a 10 minuet spell as Portumna ground to a halt due to exhaustion as they chased shadows. Final Score Portumna 1 Tullamore 7
There is no doubting that Tullamore were given a very stern test. Tullamore’s management said that it was one of the best and toughest matches they had all season and that only the fact that they had such a strong bench of fresh players ultimately made the difference. Portumna management were very disappointed in the final score line as it was not a fair reflection of the game however they were very pleased with the attitude and skill shown and perhaps against lesser opposition Portumna maybe able to add some much need points to the board. Man of the match – Conor Barry- Unbelievable first half display
The very talented u9 squad played superbly and blew local rivals out of the water on Saturday. From the kick-off the skill and teamwork of the boys was on display. Each player looked comfortable on the ball and looked to pick out a team-mate with every pass. As the boys played so well and worked for each other the chances came thick and fast. By half time Portumna were 4-0 up. In the second half there was no let up and that allowed the coach to rotate the squad. All players contributed to an immense display from such a young bunch of lads. Portumna went on to score another 3 goals in the second half with Eyrecourt bagging a late consolation goal to leave the final score 7-1. Both coach and assistant coach Orla and Fabian were thrilled with their charges performance and unanimously agree that this was the performance of the season so far. Squad A.Page, A.Flaherty, D.o'Donoghue, S.Brien, B.Murphy, N.Connelly, D.Gorman, C.Hanley, B.Touhy, C.Farrell, M.Walsh, A.Slevin, J.Geraghty
After their great win against Brookfield of the SDSL in the last round Portumna were drawn away to Clane FC in the third round of the National Cup. The weather had been dreadful up to the match and the conditions on the pitch were poor, however Clane FC should be praised to have a pitch anyway playable with the weather over the last 6 weeks. Portumna haven’t had a match for weeks and it showed. Clane were a strong side with a few very polished players and were physically stronger in many positions. Portumna were under pressure form the start however they held Clane to long range efforts. Unfortunately Niall Royston had a somewhat mixed day and let two or three goals in that on another day he would be gathering with ease. Portumna were only a goal down at half time and were getting well into the game. Unfortunately they went two nil down after 5 minutes in the second half after some very good work by the Clane forwards, who caught our defense a little too high up the pitch. Portumna rallied and scored an excellent strike into the top corner by Ronan O Meara. Clane then exerted some pressure and were given easy goals which Portumna need to sort out if they are to get anything out of this season. Clane ran out 5-1 victors but Portumna missed two or three glorious chances which they failed to convert. There is no doubting that on another day we could have made it a much tighter affair and the scoreline definately didn’t reflect the closeness of the game for the majority of the match. All the subs got on and put in a good shift for the team.
Portumna were away to Portlaoise in this league encounter. The reverse match earlier in the season led to a 2 all draw with neither team performing well. Portlaoise have been a somewhat surprise package this year as they have amalgamated the two teams from last year into a much stronger unit this year. They have already put a few teams to the sword and they look like they could be the dark horses in the league this year. Portumna on the other hand have had a season to forget so far. The Christmas break could not come quick enough. They were out played for large portions of the game. Conor Barry one of the key players for Portumna was injured and could only do 10 minutes –his quality was there to be seen when he set up Portumna’s goal and created two clear cut chances in the 10 minutes he was on. Without his abilities in the middle of the park Rona O Meara was having a frustrating day. The influential James Mullaney from Portlaoise was creating huge difficulties for the Portumna midfielders. Portumna were guilty of spurning a hatful of glorious chance and once again they made life very difficult for themselves. Portaloise ran out 5-1 winners and once again Portumna can look back on the opportunities spurned.
Portumna travelled to Frankford on Saturday for our 10th match of the league. This match was captained by James Conway. Portumna got the first goal of the match from Dualta Gallagher, which was his first goal of this season. Frankford came back immediately with their 1st goal, and then a penalty was given to them, which was saved brilliantly by Oisin Donoghue. Towards the end of the first half Frankford got their second goal. Half time finished with Frankford leading 2-1. A few changes were made in the second half, with Matthew Haugh replacing Oisin Donoghue in goals Oisin O'Sullivan, Francis Starr, Jason Doerflinger, and Eoin Gohery replaced Luke Quinn, James Conway, Oliver Parry and Dualta Gallager. David O'Meara went on in this half to score 2 goals and Sean Lynch scored the other 2 goals, one of which was a header from a corner. Match finished at full time with Portumna winning by 3 goals. All our players played fantastic in this match. The squad on the day were as follows : Goals Oisin Donoghue / Matthew Haugh. Backs Oliver Parry / Darragh Barry / Tomas Fahy. Midfield Sean Lynch / David O'Meara / Luke Quinn. Forwards Dualta Gallagher / James Conway (Captain). Subs Oisin O'Sullivan / Eoin Gohery / Francis Starr / Jason Doerflinger
Killavilla 0-1 Portumna
U10's travelled to Villa Park, Killavilla on Saturday. It was great for these boys to get a game in as they have missed the last two weeks due to bad weather and they are now back to their winning ways. With our 2 goalies out sick for this match Oliver Parry took up goalie position for the day and had an outstanding performance. Both teams started off great with Portumna missing a few chances in the first half. Then 15 minutes into the first half Sean Lynch crossed the ball in from a corner to David O'Meara who kicked the ball at goal but was denied by a Killavilla player handling the ball in the box. A penalty was given to Portumna. The penalty was taken by Darragh Barry who slotted it in the bottom left hand corner of the goal. The remaining match went without any more scores. All our subs got a run out at this match and each and everyone gave a top class performance. Squad for this week were as follows :
Goalie-Oliver Parry
Backs-Jason Doerflinger, Darragh Barry, Tomas Fahy (Captain)
MidField-Sean Lynch, Oisin O'Sullivan, David O'Meara
Forwards-Eoin Gohery, Luke Quinn
Subs-Niall Darcy, Dualta Gallagher, James Conway, Francis Starr
Kiltormer 2-1 Portumna -Portumna travelled to Kiltormer today, weather conditions were horrendous and proved to be a very difficult match for us. Portumna started off great and after 10 minutes into the match Sean Lynch put the ball in the back of the net. Portumna players are used to using their skill with the ball, travelling with it and passing, but the rain and wind wasn't allowing them to do that today. We had plenty of opportunity to score in the first half, but were not getting it in the net. Half time whistle blew, the match ball was burst! and Portumna were 1-0 up. The team had to be brought into the dressing rooms at half time, they were so cold & wet, some of them were saying they couldn't feel their feet. We tried to keep their spirits up but it was proving very difficult. No substitutions were made in the second half of this match Portumna got off to a great start, with Oliver Parry keeping a holding position in the box waiting for the ball to come to him so he could put it in the back of the net. He had plenty of opportunity in this half and we missed out on 3 penalties not given to us by the referee. Tension was getting high on the sideline, but the referee would not let anything go our way. Kiltormer got 2 lucky goals in the second half. Oisin Donoghue made some fastastic saves in this match. This was not a fair score on the day as both teams were well matched and we definately should have finished off with a draw if not beaten Kiltormer. Our boys went home disheartened once again and soaked to their skin. Maybe this match should never have been played today under these conditions!
Squad: Goalie-Oisin Donoghue
Backs-Francis Starr, Jason Doerflinger (Captain), Tomas Fahy
MidField-Sean Lynch, Oisin O'Sullivan, Darragh Barry
Forward-David O'Meara, Oliver Parry
Subs-James Conway, Eoin Gohery, Dualta Gallagher
After a two week break, Portumna U10's travelled to Banagher for their 5th match of the season Awful weather conditions on the day made it very difficult for both teams to play, but Portumna once again proved the stronger team. With a few of our key players missing, due to holidays & illness the players had to be moved around and had to play in different positions. Darragh Barry and Oliver Parry took up back positions with Jason Doerflinger along side them. These 3 boys kept Banagher from scoring throughout the whole match. David O'Meara who was recovering from illness in the week went on to score the 3 goals in the first half of this match and was outstanding on the day. The wind in the second half had got a lot stronger and it was hard to keep the ball under control. Portumna boys kept their cool and finished up at the final whistle with Banagher not scoring. All our players played fantastic in this match, with each one of them making fantastic passes of the ball, which secured us another win on the day. Well done again Boys. If they keep up this standard of football for the rest of this season, we could see them topping the league table Our match is at home next week against Gallen, which are second on the league table.
Team Squad on the day were as follows:

Portumna Town F.C. u11's again faced their nearest rivals Banagher on a pitch which did not lend itself to good football. The ball was being held up by the length of the grass. The first half was a tight and scrappy affair with the ball in the air most the time. The Portumna defence of Brendan Doyle, Michael Dolan, Ryan Gohery and Leon Houlihan were well in command. In midfield Donal Shiel, Oisin Dillon were battling hard while Eoin McEvoy and Eric Flaherty were causing trouble down the flanks. The best chance of the first half fell to Eoin Gavin who was put in on goal by a pass from Mathew Finnerty but the Banagher keeper did very well to thwart his fine effort. Mark O'Sullivan then made a good save from a Banagher ball over the top of the Portumna defence. At half time the game was 0 – 0. At half time Ronan Egan was introduced into the Portumna attack. Portumna looked the more likely to score and they finally did. Eoin McEvoy made a fine run down the right and put in a fine cross which eluded the Banagher defence and was struck into the net by Ronan Egan on the back post. Portumna were playing well. Fresh legs were introduced in the form of Ryan Foley and Conor Hackett . Banagher started to pile on the pressure and scored the equaliser from a shot on the right of the box. Then Portumna upped the ante again and had two good chances to win but failed to take them unfortunately. Squad

Portumna Town F.C. u11's returned to winning ways with a hard fought victory over their nearest rivals Banagher. In a thrilling encounter Portumna came from behind three times to eventually win the game five minutes from the end. Banagher drew first blood with a fine strike low to Mark O'Sullivans right, Portumna equalised through Eric Flaherty with a powerful low shot. Banagher scored again, but Portumna again equalised with a predatory finish from Eoin Gavin. Portumna’s new back four Brendan Doyle, Ryan Gohery, Michael Dolan and Oisin Dillon were having a tough day as the game was end to end soccer. The midfield of Matthew Finnerty , Donal Shiel, Eoin McEvoy and Eoin Gavin were getting little time on the ball but imposed themselves in the second half. David Lynch and Eric Flaherty were working hard up front. At half time the score was 2 – 2. Portumna started the second half brightly putting pressure on the banagher back four and midfield. Then a cruel blow Portumna were caught by a counter attack in which Banagher scored their third goal. Portumna scored next with a fine shot from Donal Shiel. Then Portumna went into overdrive with attack after attack. Conor Hackett and Russell Maxwell were introduced and fought for every ball. Ryan Foley and Ronan Egan were brought on up front and tried to get the winning goal. With five minutes to go Eoin McEvoy charged down the right wing and struck a shot which found its way into the Banagher net. Portumna hung on for the victory in a game that was won because of their never say die attitude. Squad

U14 SFAI National Cup Round 2 Portumna 4 - 1 Brookfield
Portumna welcomed SDSL Premier League team Brookfield for this round two national Cup fixture. Portumna have shown over the last few years that they are able to raise their game for cup matches, having got to the 4th round in this competition last year and to the League cup final. This match was a welcome break from the league and offered the Portumna players some freedom to play free from the shackles of a poor start to the league. With the input form Kieran Curran on the tactics to be used for this match along with Conor Barry carrying a knock and therefore not starting, a new plan was brought into action. Sean Tuohy and Ronan O'Meara were to play up front with Colin Burke playing the centre half role along side Eoin Foley who was justifiably given the captains arm band for the day based on his displays all year. These changes along with some tinkering in midfield seemed to freshen up the Portumna Team and it had the desired effect. Brookfield currently on top of the SDSL Premier league were strong and fit looking side and most definately have some good players in their team. However Portumna began the match in a bright fashion. Sean Tuohy had a great game and looked a different player in his new role. Colin Burke was outstanding as centre half along side the always impressive Eoin Foley. Both Tommy Heagney and Niall Concannon put in the hard tackles at the back. Portumna scored the opening goal as a shot by Ronan O Meara went in off an unlucky Brookfield player trying to clear, the second goal was a fantastic lob over the keeper by Sean Tuohy. 2 Nil at half time. Portumna kept the same team for the start of the second half. Brookfield came out of the blocks and pressed for a goal. They got their just rewards for their efforts and scored in the first 5 minutes. Portumna then looked to make some changes. Eamon Larkin came on for James Coughlan and Conor Barry on for Padraig Corcoran on the left. The addition of fresh legs and with the use of some very neat passing Portumna began to crank up the pressure. Conor Barry after some neat work with Ronan latched onto a through ball and finished with aplomb past the Brookfield goalie. Portumna were in the ascendency and wrapped up the tie when Ronan O Meara finished off a great through ball from Conor barry and placed his strike in the corner. The game finished off 4-1 and was a fair reflection on the way Portumna played throughout.
Portumna welcomed Portlaoise to Marion Park for this league encounter. Portlaoise have strengthened over the summer and have the very influential James Mullaney who played such an important part in the midlands Kennedy cup run this year, playing in the centre of midfield. Both teams were very committed but generally the football on show was of a poor quality with both teams guilty of hoofing the ball at every opportunity. The ball tended to spend most of the time in the air and it wasn’t one for the scrap book. Portumna were missing Colin Burke and he was a loss to us on this occasion as his strength and power were sorely missed. Ronan O Meara scored the opening goal with a deft chip over the keeper. He has scored some lovely goals this year already and we hope that he remains injury free for the rest of the season. Portlaoise clipped the crossbar by young Mullaney with a rasping 30 yard shot on his bad side and they got an equalizer just before half time as a through ball was neatly finished by the attacker. In the second half Portumna again scored with some neat work by Ronan O Meara who slid in a cross for Niall Concannon the Portumna left back who finished it very well. Portlaoise then got the equalizer after some good work by their right sided midfield. Our midfielders failed to track the runners and the attacker finished neatly. All in all a two all result was a fair reflection on the day. Neither team will be too pleased with the quality on show and Portumna will have to improve significantly if they are to move up the table.
Final score 2- 2
Portumna Town F.C. u11's suffered defeat in their first away game of the season. This was a game that Portumna had enough chances to win. Portumna started the game very well. Eric Flaherty and Michael Dolan looking dangerous down the left. Donal Shiel and Owen McEvoy were commanding in midfield. The Portumna defence of Brendan Doyle, Ryan Gohery, Leon Houlihan and Oisin Dillon looked comfortable. Then Emo won a penalty but failed to convert it shooting narrowly wide. Portumna picked up the pace of the game and were denied by good defending from the Emo back four. Portumna were pounding the Emo goal, on a counter attack Emo scored, a well struck shot. Just Before half time after a foul on Eoin Gavin, Eric Flaherty scored from just outside the Box to bring Portumna level. The second half was just like the first with Portumna forcing the pace. Emo looked dangerous on the counter attack bringing a good save from Mark O Sullivan. At this stage Portumna were mounting attack after attack with Matthew Finnerty on the right and Eric Flaherty on the left but the Emo keeper and defence were resolute. Just when it looked like ending in a draw emo broke away and scored the winner. This was a cruel result for the Portumna team who deserved at least a point from this game.

Someone in the MSL must be upset with the u14 management or something as the fixtures for the first three league matches couldn't have been much tougher. Already with losses away to Tullamore and at home to Birr, Portumna now had the task of tying to get a result against the league and cup champions. To say this season has began very tough for the players and staff would be an understatement, however these games have to be played sometimes, so the team were given a game plan. Portumna started the match as massive underdogs against a strong and athletic side. However with the game plan in place the lads on the pitch executed it beautifully and having soaked up some pressure in the first 15 minutes Portumna went on a quick counterattack. Ronan O'Meara stole a yard on the right back for Abbeyleix and with a few players out of position he ran in on goal and scored. Portumna defended brilliantly and although Abbeyleix dominated large portions of the game they were never really threatening at all in the first half. That was all to change with about 5 minutes left in the first half when somehow the referee claimed a ball had come of Conor Barry as an Abbeyleix player attempted a strike at goal. Utter rubbish, the referee has given some bizzare decisions in recent matches but this beggared belief. The Abbeyleix striker missed the goal and our defenders by 5 yards and this was to be a costly blunder by the referee,as Abbeyleix scored from the resultant corner. Although Portumna went in all square at half time you could see how the injustice of the situation had affected the players and the management. Ronan O' Meara was injured as was Michael Hoban and this just sealed our fate as the whole dynamic of the team had to be changed toaccomodate these forced changes. Abbeyliex went on to score 3 further goals in the second half and deserved their victory in the end. We firmly believe that we wil get some decisions to go our way in the future and that we will shortly get our league season kick started with a win..............
Portumna were given an away fixture against fellow MSL club Killleigh in the first round of the SFAI national cup. Killeigh play in a division below Portumna but they prooved to be worthy oponents on the day. Portumna had perhaps a bit more skill on the ball and with a stong central defence of Conor Barry and Eoin Foley, the formidable Colin Burke and Ronan O'Meara up front along with some other strong players and although they made hard work of it, Portumna ran out eventual winners 3-2, even after the usually very reliable Colin Burke missed a penalty to put the game beyond doubt with 10 minutes to go. Two of the goals were outstanding Colin Burkes second was a perfect blend of deft skill on the first touch and unbelievable power to smash home the goal. Ronan O'Meara showed a touch of continental skill as he sent two defenders the wrong way with a Zidane turn of the most outrageous kind and finished low into the net as every one on the pitch looked at each other perplexed. It was well worth traveling for that alone. Portumna will be at home in the next round and will have to sharpen up to ensure we progress further.
03-10 Birr v Portumna result 2-3 U10's travelled to Birr today for their 1st away match this season and notched up another win. This was a very close match with 2 very well matched teams. Both teams started off fantastic, and just into the first 5 minutes of the match, a cross from Oliver Parry (Captain) over to Darragh Barry on the left wing secured a goal in the back of the net for Portumna. Portumna's passing of the ball was fantastic in this match and this secured another goal later on from Darragh again. Birr went on to score their 1st goal in the first half. The second half Birr went on to score again. Porturmna were given a free in the last 10 minutes of the match which was taken by Sean Lynch who made sure it was going straight into the back of the net for Portumna. Portumna kept their cool for the remainder of the match and when the final whistle went Portumna got their much deserved 3 points. Well done to all the Portumna players who played outstanding today. Keep up the great work!.

Portumna Town F.C. 2 Mucklagh 1
Portumna Town F.C. u11s notched up their second win in their second game of the season on Saturday. Portumna got of to a great start. On five minutes Portumna were awarded a free just outside Mucklaghs box on the left hand side after good pressure from Matthew Finnerty. Eric Flaherty swung in a great free kick which travelled all the way to the back of the net. Then 3 minutes later Portumna won a corner on the right which Eric Flaherty took again swung into the danger area and Eoin McEvoy converted from close range. Portumna were all over Mucklagh. Donal Shiel , Russell Maxwell and Mathew Finnerty all going close to scoring for Portumna. Then Mucklagh had a goal ruled out for offside. Just before half time mucklagh broke through the Portumna defence and scored this time the goal stood, which left the score at Portumna 2 Mucklagh 1 at half time. The second half was a tense affair with neither team creating many chances. The Portumna back four of Leon Houlihan, Ryan Gohery , Brendan Doyle and Oisin Dillon were holding firm . The second half saw the introduction of all the subs, who also played their part in this victory. This was a hard fought victory over a much improved Mucklagh team.

26/9/09 Portumna 4-0 Killavilla - U10's played at home again this week with another win under their belts. Our boys started off with a goal from Darragh Barry in the first 2 minutes of the game. Portumna were the stronger team and in the first half of this match Portumna had full possession of the ball. At half time, we were leading 2-0. In the second half our subs were all given a run out. Portumna kept up the scoring with us going on to score another 2 goals, one from Sean Lynch and the other from David O'Meara who was captain for the day. Well done again boys!

Portumna hosted Birr for the first time this season at Marion Park on Saturday the 19th September. As usual the game was as close as ever with Birr in the ascendancy early on. After 10-15min of Birr domination Portumna made a quick break with Colin Burke bearing down on goal with only the keeper to beat but the keeper made a very good save from the resulting shot. Again Portumna pressed and Ronan O Meara was fouled 25yds on the right of the Birr box and he scored a fantastic goal from the resultant free kick. 1 nil up and all to play for. Birr got a deserved equalizer later in the half although some of the Portumna defending was very poor for long periods throughout the game. The second half proved to be very eventful. Portumna again were very slack at times in the defense and two awful defensive blunders gave Birr an 3-1 lead, further good chances went a begging for Birr as they sensed the nervousness in some of the defenders. On the balance of play especially in the second half Portumna were unfortunate to be behind. With the defense leaking goals, Portumna had to make changes. Conor Barry was moved back into the centre half position with Sean Tuohy moved into midfield. The changes seemed to work well. Portumna scored a wonderful second goal by the always dangerous Ronan O'Meara. A great chance to level the tie with 10mins left was missed when a Portumna shot hit the crossbar. As Portumna pushed and pushed it seemed that we were going to get our just rewards. A magnificent through ball to the unstoppable Ronan O'Meara was played from midfield, he latch onto it and was bearing down on goal when the Birr centre half pulled and dragged him to the ground just outside the box. This was the most blatant foul to be seen all day and warranted a red card as it was without doubt a surefire goal scoring chance. Inexplicably the referee awarded a free kick to Birr and yellow carded young O'Meara for dissent. Sometimes there is nothing that can be said other than there is always next time and maybe we might benefit from some decisions.

Portumna Town F.C. 4-0 Rosenallis U11's started the season with a good performance in their 4 -0 victory over Rosenallis on Saturday. The game was tight in the first 20 minutes as both teams were playing 11 aside football on a full size pitch for the first time. Portumna had the first two chances of the game, Eric Flaherty twice bringing good saves out of the Rosenallis keeper. Then the break through came for Portumna when Eoin Gavin was put in on goal by a pass from Mathew Finnerty, he was then brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded. Michael Dolan slotted home the penalty to give Portumna the lead. Then Rosenallis were denied a goal by a great save by Mark O'Sullivan. In the second half Portumna played much better and started to pass the ball. The back four of Leon Houlihan, Ryan Gohery, Conor Hackett and Brendan Doyle were all winning their individual battles. Eoin Gavin got his first goal of the game five minutes from the restart after a fine run down the line and cross from Michael Dolan. Eoin showed his predatory instinct for his second goal from a corner from Eric Flaherty. Donal Shiel and Oisin Dillon were starting to dominate midfield. The injection of fresh legs on this hot day in the form of David Lynch, Russell Maxwell, Niall Duane and Ryan Foley strengthened Portumna and they became more dominant. Portumna were running riot with Donal Shiel and Michael Dolan breaking from midfield at every opportunity. Then came a goal fitting of winning any game, Donal Shiel picked up the ball on half way and dribbled past three Rosenallis players and slotted the ball past the keeper for Portumna’s fourth. It was a fitting end to a great squad performance.
