Soccer began in England in the mid-1800's, and was originally played by the higher, more aristocratic English classes in their boarding schools and private clubs. The ease and inexpense of the sport quickly moved it ahead as a sport for the masses however. The London Football Association was founded in 1863 and was responsible for standardizing game rules throughout Europe. Soccer began to spread throughout Europe almost immediately, with Spain, Germany, Italy, and France all taking up the game by the early 20th century. As interest in the sport grew throughout the world, so did an interest in formal competition. In 1900, the first soccer game was played at the Olympics, with medals introduced just eight years later. Professional players, however, were exempt from competition in the Olympic Games for more than 80 years. In 1904, The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), was formed, followed by the first World Cup international competition in 1930. A round-robin style tournament that pitted teams from individual nations against each other every four years, the World Cup has now grown into an international affair, with nearly 200 teams now seeking admittance!!!!

With us getting ever closer to the 3000 hits stage in such a short time just goes to show the power of the internet in spreading the word about the excellent work being done at the club by all our managers, players and club officials. Well done to all and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
As the festive season gets underway let us assess the first half of the season for all of our Portumna teams. Our U10's lie 5th (of 7) in the U10 WEST DIVISION and although a tough league another win will put them mid table. The U11's are in a similiar situation also lying 5th (of 7) in the U11 PREMIER DIVISION and again another result in their next game up would push them up the table. The U12's in the MAJOR DIVISION are currently bottom of their league but have shown enough fight & decent performances recently to gain respectability and with teams above them having played up to two games more it is only a matter of time before they advance up the positions. The u13's having been promoted last season sit respectably mid table and are well capable of staying in the division a major success in itself.

Well What Can We Say? An absolutely fantastic performance from Portumna Town's U12 squad today secured the Midlands Schoolboys League Shield Title for this season with a 4-0 win over Mullingar Town. From start to finish playing an accomplished passing game was the order of the day and it is a credit to their manager Cormac Barry that they played this way, each and every goal owed much to the expansive, open and slick passing game which Mullingar could not live with for the entire match. Match report to follow......
Special mention must go to Eoin Foley-Cormac Barry's U12 Player Of The Month for March who unfortunately did not play in the Shield Final as he was injured, but he played a massive part in getting the team to this game and we are sure he will come back for next season.

With the season now almost over for all of our teams it is time to reflect on what has been a very exciting and exhausting year from U8's through to our U12's. Our Under 10's & U11's both finished their respective second seasons in respectable mid table positions and Cormac Barry's U12's finished as runners up, this being all the more remarkable as it was the managers debut season for Portumna Town. The Midlands U12 representative XI lost to Kilkenny last week, the final score of 3-1 didn't really reflect how good a performance this was from the Midlands team, the games outstanding memory being Ronan O'Meara's (Portumna) outstanding thread needle precision pass for Aaron Rafter (Abbyleix) to run onto and to finish exquisitely past a despairing Kilkenny goalkeeper. Football is a funny old game they say!

Yet again Portumna Town's Under 12 manager Cormac Barry finds his squad with a free weekend due to the lack of an official to referee the scheduled home match versus Banagher this coming saturday (16/02/08).This must be getting especially frustrating for the squad of players that Mr Barry has at his disposal as it is almost 3 months! since their last competitive match which was as a result of the bad weather and unplayable pitches across the Midlands League grounds.Let us hope that the other Portumna teams involved today namely the U9's at Birr Town & the U11's at Emo have better luck in getting their respective games played.Good Luck from portumnatown.com
Last week was a fairly busy week for Portumna Town FC, on the back of weeks of inactivity due to the recent spell of poor weather. On wednesday last week 35 children & 10 adults made the long journey to Croke Park to watch Ireland take on the Worlds Greatest footballing nation Brazil. All the children were thrilled to be at such a special match and their behaviour on the day ensured the adults too had an enjoyable experience. Upcoming saturday fixtures- U9 Away to Birr 11a.m k.o, U11 Away to Emo 10.30 a.m k.o,U12 Home to Banagher 10.00 a.m k.o.
A real mixed bag of results for our players involved in competitive action this weekend.Ger O'Sullivan's Under 10's got a battling 1-1 draw with Gallen Utd in the U10 MSL WEST DIVISION and Mike O'Sullivans Under 11's unluckily lost 5-2 to Gallen Utd a scoreline that just didn't reflect the possession and many chances created by Portumna Town. Finally our players representing Portumna in the Under 12's Midlands Schoolboys Inter League competition versus Carlow had outstanding games in the much deserved 3-1 win in Tullamore
This week we hope to get our season back underway as Portumna Town's under 10 & under 11 teams face Gallen United of Ferbane in rescheduled fixtures from last week, the kick offs are arranged for 10.00 am and 10.45 am respectively. There will be no under 12 fixture as an MSL U12 Inter League representative team will be playing against Carlow in Tullamore this weekend. Good luck to both Ger O'sullivan (u10) & Mike O'Sullivan (u11) and their squads this weekend and also to the MSL squad in Tullamore.

Unfortunately due to heavy snowfall yesterday and freezing weather last night the Midlands Schoolboys League programme for this saturday (2nd february) was disrupted with many games called off.Portumna Town's U10, U11 & U12's fixtures v Gallen United were sadly called off due to the bad condition of the pitch, some of the Portumna teams have not played a match for 2 months which prompted one manager to describe the fixture postponement as a 'DISASTER'! If it wasn't for our U8 & U9 teams being involved in the exciting indoor FUTSAL BLITZ'S then no games will have been played in January at all.Let us hope the weather has a significant improvement and that the lads will be hungry when the season resumes in earnest when the pitches improve.Keep up to date with further news @ www.portumnatown.com your clubs soccer website.
It has been some weeks since any of PORTUMNA TOWN'S teams have played any 11 a side competitive matches due to unplayable pitches and the christmas break, this weekend they aim to put all that behind them with an away day trip to FERBANE where the under 10's, U11's & U12's take on GALLEN UNITED in what we hope will be a successful visit by the Portumna squads & their managers.First up are Ger O'Sullivans U10's with a 10.00 am kick off followed by Mike O'Sullivans U11's at 10.45 am and this is then followed by a mouth watering clash at 12.00 when 2nd placed Cormac Barry's in form U12's take on 3rd placed Gallen Utd in what promises to be an exciting affair.PortumnaTown.com wishes all teams success this saturday.
