The club is delighted to report that Conor Barry, one of a number of talented players within our current U14 squad was selected to spend a few days at the end of April with Oxford Utd to take part in various training sessions and also to play in a match. Along with Conor, James Mullaney from Portlaoise Town FC was also chosen and the two boys were accompanied by their parents and Brian Flannery, head coach of the Midlands Schoolboys League. Their first day began with a tour of the Kassam Stadium followed by two training sessions, one with the U19 academy and the other with the U15/16 academy. Friday saw them take part in another training session with the U19 academy which served as the platform for the assesment by the English FA of an Oxford coach to receive his UEFA "A" Licence, heady stuff indeed. Saturday was a free day and they got to go and see Birmingham v Burnley and it was back to business on Sunday to take part in an U15/16 game for Oxford against a very talented Bristol Rovers team. The game finished 1-1 and both lads played extremely well, fitted in very comfortably and never looked out of place. Both left a good impression on the coaches and future trips back to Oxford Utd. for the boys to take part in more games are a distinct possibility. All in all it was a fantastic experience for the boys and they thoroughly enjoyed it. As well as acknowledging this achievement by Conor, Portumna Town FC is proud to be involved in providing youngsters opportunities such as this. Our league, The Midlands Schoolboys/Girls League, is a very progressive league and is making great strides in player development and creating opportunities for the youngsters playing in the league. As a club we are delighted to be able to offer children from the locality the opportunity to play football but It is also good to know that players like Conor who are ambitious, have a good attitude and who apply themselves in training sessions and matches will be rewarded for their efforts by being provided the chance, through the club, to pursue their dreams further. Well done Conor and we hope there will be many more players from Portumna Town FC who will be offered trips like this.

After giving Mullingar a torrid time last week the return match promised to be an indication of how Cormac Barry's Under 14's season would pan out. Instead of an easy fixture a regrouped Mullingar had a point to make and this they did by bouncing back to give portumna more of a match this time. To see a full match report of how it went please see our match reports section in our menu section to the left of this page.

The U9's travelled to play Killavilla A on saturday determined to keep their unbeaten league record intact. Portumna got off to a flying start and were three goals to the good inside the first ten minutes. The team were playing some lovely football and should of added to their lead by half time. Killavilla came out all guns blazing in the second half but it was tha away side who increased their lead. Portumna were cruising going into the final minutes of the game but gifted the home side a goal and Killavilla bagged another on the final whistle. The result never in doubt but the final score 4-2 to Portumna a mark off the pressure Killavilla exerted in the second half. Squad on the day was as follows B.Murphy, N.Connelly, S.Brien, M.Walsh, D.O'Donoghue, D.Gorman, C.Hanley, A.Flaherty

Portumna's U9's produced another win, when the u9 squad travelled to Ferbane to face Gallen on saturday. After a brilliant performance last week and scoring 7 goals it was great to see these young boys once again show what they are capable of. From the off Portumna looked to pass and move the ball around. The chances soon came and the goals quickly followed. The final score was 4-0. Squad: S.Brien, B.Murphy, M.Walsh, N.Connelly, D.Gorman, D.O'Donoghue, A.Slevin.
Portumna 6-0 Banagher - Portumna finally got to play a match after an 8 week break. We were at home this week against Banagher. A full squad turned up for this match. In the first few minutes of the match Dualta Gallagher (Captain) scored our 1st goal, followed later on by 2 more goals in the first half by Oliver Parry & Sean Lynch. Second half scorers were Oisin O'Sullivan, David O'Meara & Luke Quinn. This was a great match and a great win for Portumna, which still leaves us top of the table. All the squad gave a fantastic perfomance on the day and hopefuly this win will be repeated on Saturday when we meet Birr B (away). Well done Lads.

Portumna's Under 9's remained undefeated in Sundays Futsal. Once again the dedicated U9 squad (and their parents) headed for Mountmellick for the second time this season. T'n'S, Mucklagh and Abbeyleix provided the opposition on this occasion. The players found it difficult at first to find the back of the net but their hard work and endeavour would eventually pay off. All the squad got valuable playing time and acquitted themselves admirably. With two draws and a win out of three games played this talented bunch can be very proud of themselves. PLAYERS: B.Tuohy, C.Farrell, C.Hanley, R.Connelly, A.Flaherty, D.Gorman, A.Page, N.Connelly, D.O'Donoghue
Gunmen have opened fire on a bus carrying the Togo football team to the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, wounding at least six people, a Togolese football official said. Togolese football federation vice president Gabriel Ameyi said reserve goalkeeper Obilale Kossi and central defender Serge Akakpo were among those hurt. The team's top player, Emmanuel Adebayor, was unharmed, according to his club Manchester City. "They should not have travelled by road," Mr Ameyi said in Lome, Togo. "They did not tell CAF (Confederation of African Football) that they were travelling by road. They should have flown to Angola." The 16-team African championship starts on Sunday in Angola, with Togo due to play its opening match on Monday against Ghana in Cabinda. The team had just crossed the border into Angola when the bus came under fire. "We were machine-gunned like dogs," Togo player Thomas Dossevi, who plays for French club Nantes, told Radio Monte Carlo. "They were armed to the teeth ... We spent 20 minutes underneath the seats of the bus." Dossevi said the players were inclined to pull out of the tournament. "We don't want to play this African Cup of Nations," he told Infosport. "We're thinking about our teammates - to be hit by bullets when you've come to play football is disgusting." SO DONT BE TO CONCERNED ABOUT THE SNOW !!!
U9's kick-started their futsal season with some impressive displays against tough opposition. On dec 19th last some hardy players and parents braved the icy conditions and travelled to Mountmellick for the first u9 futsal blitz of the 2009/10 season. Newcomers Killavilla and Birr provided our opposition in the first of four games. All teams were well matched and found the indoor game tough to get used to. This was reflected in the scorelines 1-1 and 0-0. Abbeyleix proved too strong on the day winning 3-1. Another Killavilla team were our final opponents again a 1-1 draw was the result. All the squad got valuable game time and acquitted themselves well. Squad: N.Connelly, B.Murphy, A.Page, D.Gorman, D.ODonoghue, C.Hanley, C.Farrell, M.Walsh, B.Tuohy, R.Connelly.

A rain and wind swept day saw Portumna U10's go to near neighbours Kiltormer FC for a derby game that perhaps should not have been played in such severe weather conditions. To see the match report click on our link here.
Portumna 0-3 Gallen - The U10's played Gallen at home, with a few of our key players missing again this week, some of the other players once again had to play in different positions. Portumna started off great, with a few misses at goal in the first half. Gallen proved to be the stronger team on Saturday with them first to the ball every time. Portumna boys just couldn't get round them on the day and seemed to tire very quickly. They got very disheartened when they went 2 goals down, and couldn't seem to pick themselves up. Their winning streak came to an end on Saturday but hopefully they will learn from this and go out next week fighting for their position on the league table. Keep your Heads Up Boys!
